Step · ID & numbers
Obtain a NIE (foreigner identification number)
The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the personal, unique number that identifies a foreigner in all Spanish administrative, tax, work and social dealings; if you do not already have one, you request it from the police/foreigners' office with form EX-15 and a paid fee.
- Why it matters
- Almost everything that follows (tax ID, Cl@ve, FNMT certificate, bank account, signing a contract, Social Security) asks for your NIE, and you will often be asked for it before you have a residence card.
- When
- You have economic, professional or social ties to Spain (renting, working, buying, opening accounts, applying for residence) and do not yet have a NIE.
- How long it takes
- The police procedure is to be resolved within a maximum of five days from when the application enters the competent office (Policía Nacional sede). Waiting time for an appointment is not published.
