Sort rubbish and recycling in Avilés

Avilés uses the Asturias color system: yellow for packaging, blue for paper and cardboard, green for glass, brown for food waste and a separate 'resto' container for everything else. Brown containers are being locked: since 14 July 2026 some neighborhoods need an electronic card or the Komtainer app to open them.

Why it matters
Putting the right waste in the right container is expected in every building, and in locked zones you need a card or the app before you can use the brown bin at all.
When
You move into a home in Avilés.
Last checked

Cost: Using the containers is free; the waste fee is charged separately and was not captured here.

Steps

  1. Know the colors
COGERSA, the Asturias public waste body, lists: yellow for plastic bottles and containers, cans, drink cartons, thin plastic film, aluminum foil and white foam trays; blue for newspapers, magazines, advertising, clean used paper and cardboard boxes; green for glass jars and bottles; brown for fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells and nut shells, bread, bones and fish bones, dirty kitchen paper and napkins, dried flowers and leaves; gray/resto for diapers, gauze, cigarette butts and ash, hygiene waste and cotton. The council’s glass campaign confirms green is glass in Avilés.
  2. Keep the brown bin clean
The council’s October 2024 notice says these do NOT go in the brown container and belong in the resto fraction: diapers, sanitary pads, wet wipes, cigarette butts, sweeping dust, animal waste and cat litter, and hair.
  3. Get a card or the app for the brown bin
From Tuesday 14 July 2026 a card or smartphone is needed to open brown containers in El Quirinal, El Nodo, La Villa, La Maruca, Jardín de Cantos, La Carriona and El Alfaraz; the council says this will later extend to the rest of the city. Cards: customer office of the street-cleaning and waste service, C/ Cabruñana 44. App: Komtainer (iOS and Android); registering needs an email, your postal address and the meter number shown on your water bill (for a shared meter, ask your building’s administrator).
  4. Free compostable bags
In October 2024 the council handed out packs of 40 ten-liter compostable bags, one pack per home per month while supplies lasted, on showing ID (DNI, passport, NIE or driving license) and proof of residence, at C/ Cabruñana 44 and other points. Whether this is still running was not confirmed.
  5. Collection days and problems
The council says the Komtainer app shows collection schedules, sends notifications, gives access to puntos limpios and bulky-item pick-ups, and lets you report full, broken or badly closed containers. Other city problems can be reported in Cuida Avilés (cuida.aviles.es or the free app).
  6. Special and bulky waste
Batteries, cooking oil and other special household waste go to a punto limpio (COGERSA lists them separately from the street bins). Avilés says it has two: Punto Limpio Ecoparque Los Canapés and Centro de Reciclaje El Quirinal; their addresses and hours were not shown on the council page. For furniture, see the bulky-items item.
