Register on the municipal padrón (empadronamiento)
The padrón is the town hall’s register of everyone who lives in the municipality; you ask to be added (alta) at a Gijón citizen-attention office with your ID and proof that you occupy the address.
- Why it matters
- It is the council’s official proof that you live in Gijón and at which address, and many later steps (local services, health-card routes for people without Social Security cover, school and housing aid, some immigration paperwork) ask for a padrón certificate or volante.
- When
- You start living at an address in Gijón (including when you move to a new address within Gijón).
- How long it takes
- The Hoja Padronal states a maximum processing time of three months from the application date; typical real-world speed not found in official sources.
