Set up gas and heating (natural gas, butane, safety inspections)
Homes in Gijón may use piped natural gas (network run by Nortegas, supply contracted with a retailer), bottled butane at a regulated maximum price, or electric heating; gas installations must be inspected every five years.
- Why it matters
- Hot water, cooking and heating in many Spanish flats depend on gas, and the supply contract, the periodic inspection and leak procedure work differently from electricity. Knowing who does what avoids safety problems and cut-offs.
- When
- You move into a home with a gas boiler, hob or radiator system, or you are told your flat uses butane bottles or a gas holder you need to take over.
- How long it takes
- Switching natural gas retailer: at most 3 weeks (CNMC). New connection: roughly 6 business days for validation plus 6 for inspection, per the CNMC guide.
