Obtain a Spanish Social Security number (NUSS)
The Número de la Seguridad Social (NUSS) identifies you with the Spanish Social Security system; your employer normally requests it when you start work, or you can request it yourself online or in person with your passport, NIE or DNI.
- Why it matters
- You need it before any Social Security affiliation (employment, self-employment) and for later benefits and health-care entitlement through the INSS, and you can request it before you have a job.
- When
- You are about to start a job or self-employment in Spain, or otherwise need Social Security services, and do not yet have a NUSS.
- How long it takes
- You can request it at any time, but before affiliation; no processing time is stated in the sources found.
