Understand your Spanish tax ID (NIF) and when your NIE serves as one
The NIF is Spain’s tax identification number; for most foreign residents the NIE assigned to them is the number used as NIF, and only people who legally have no NIE need the tax agency to assign a separate NIF.
- Why it matters
- Banks, employers, landlords, utilities and the tax agency ask for your NIF/NIE; knowing that your NIE is the number to give avoids confusion and duplicate registrations.
- When
- You enter a transaction with tax relevance (bank account, employment, lease, utilities, buying a car, filing taxes) or need to deal with the Agencia Tributaria.
