Understand the Schengen 90/180 rule, the EES and ETIAS before you have residency
US citizens may stay in Spain (and the rest of the Schengen area combined) without a visa for at most 90 days in any rolling 180-day period; those days are now registered biometrically by the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), and a separate EU travel authorization (ETIAS) is planned but not yet running.
- Why it matters
- Overstaying the visa-free allowance can jeopardize a later residence application and future travel, and the EES now tracks your entry and exit dates automatically, so you need to know how the days are counted before you land and while you wait for a visa or permit.
- When
- You are planning a pre-move visit, arriving before your long-stay visa is in hand, or applying for residence from inside Spain while still on a visa-free stay.
