Drive legally with a US license, then get a Spanish license
A US driving license (with an International Driving Permit or official translation) is valid in Spain only for up to six months after you become a resident; the US has no license-exchange (canje) agreement with Spain, so after that you must pass the DGT theory and practical exams to get a Spanish license.
- Why it matters
- Many Americans assume they can swap their license; they can’t, and driving on a US license after six months of residence means driving without a valid license.
- When
- Before you arrive (get an IDP) and as soon as you become a resident (the six-month clock starts).
- How long it takes
- US license usable for at most 6 months after becoming resident (DGT). Theory exam pass valid 2 years; psychophysical report valid 90 days.
