Pay the yearly vehicle tax (IVTM, "road tax") on your car
The Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica (IVTM) is a yearly municipal tax that the person named on the vehicle’s registration pays to the council of the address on the permiso de circulación. Each council sets its own amount and payment period within limits in the national law.
- Why it matters
- If you own a Spanish-registered car, this is a recurring bill you will get from your town hall, and it is separate from insurance and the ITV inspection. Knowing which council bills you and that amounts differ by council helps you avoid surprises.
- When
- You own a car, motorcycle or other motor vehicle registered in Spain, or you have just bought or moved one here.
