Dispose of bulky items, electronics and hazardous waste (enseres and puntos limpios)

Furniture and other bulky household items can be collected by EMULSA after a phone request, and special household waste (electronics, paint, oil, tires, small rubble) goes free of charge to one of Gijón’s four puntos limpios.

Why it matters
When you move in or out of a flat you often need to get rid of old furniture, mattresses or appliances; leaving them next to street containers is not the way, and the puntos limpios have access rules and daily limits.
When
You are furnishing or clearing a flat, or have old furniture, appliances, paint, batteries or rubble to dispose of.
How long it takes
Bulky-item pickup typically within 24-48 hours of scheduling per EMULSA Carta de Servicios 2021 (to verify).

Cost: Free: puntos limpios are free for household special waste (COGERSA); bulky-item collection is free per the municipal service sheet (secondary copy, 2019); Emaús reuse collection is free per EMULSA FAQ.

What you need

Steps

  1. Decide: collection or punto limpio
Furniture and other bulky household items: ask EMULSA for collection. Electrical appliances, fluorescent tubes, batteries, motor oil, used tires, paint, small construction rubble and similar special waste: take to a punto limpio (COGERSA citizen guide).
  2. Request bulky-item collection by phone
Call 985 14 14 14 (ext. 2 for enseres) in office hours, say what you have and where it will be, and follow the instructions for when to put it out. EMULSA’s Carta de Servicios 2021 states the collection service runs Monday to Friday at night (23:00 to 05:55) and on Sundays, and that items are normally collected within 24-48 hours of scheduling (to verify).
  3. Consider reuse for items in good condition
EMULSA’s FAQ says reusable furniture can be collected free of charge by the social-enterprise Emaús (Riquirraque) via the same number (985 14 14 14, ext. 2).
  4. Or take items to a punto limpio
Bring your Tarjeta Ciudadana (or DNI) and sort items into the right containers. The four Gijón centers are Roces, Tremañes, La Calzada and Somió; see the where section for addresses and the opening hours published in EMULSA’s leaflet.
  5. Do not leave items by the street containers
Street containers are for packaging, paper, glass, organic and general household waste only (GLIFE-0046). Special waste must go to a punto limpio (COGERSA).
