Know shop hours, Sunday opening and Gijón public holidays (2026-2027)

Most larger shops in Asturias may open on only ten Sundays/holidays a year (set annually by the Principality), small independent shops and some food/convenience shops are free to choose their hours, and Gijón has its own two local holidays on top of the national and Asturian ones.

Why it matters
A newcomer who plans a Sunday supermarket run or a shopping trip on a holiday may find big stores shut, and offices, schools, shops and public services follow the holiday calendar.
When
You are planning shopping, errands or appointments around a weekend, a puente or a public holiday.
How long it takes
Asturias fixes the authorized Sundays/holidays each year (for 2026 by a resolution of 19 Nov 2025, published 28 Nov 2025); the 2027 list has not been published yet as of 6 Oct 2026.

What you need

Steps

  1. Check the authorized opening days for 2026
The Principality’s resolution of 19 Nov 2025 (BOPA no. 230, 28 Nov 2025) lets commerce in Asturias open on these ten days in 2026: 4 Jan, 11 Jan, 2 Apr, 16 Aug, 12 Oct, 2 Nov, 29 Nov, 8 Dec, 20 Dec and 27 Dec. Opening is permitted, not compulsory: each trader decides whether and when to open (Ley 1/2004 art. 4.3).
  2. Gijón tourist-zone days in 2026
By resolution of 22 Dec 2025 (BOPA no. 249, 29 Dec 2025) a defined urban perimeter of Gijón is a 'zona de gran afluencia turística' on 29 June and 30 August 2026, when shops there may open freely. The perimeter is the area bounded by streets including calle Maximino Marino Fernández, Emilio Muñiz, Honesto Batalón, Tránsito de las Ballenas, Muelle de Oeste, Jardines de la Reina, Marqués de San Esteban, Pedro Duro, Palacio Valdés, Avenida de la Costa, Avenida de Castilla, calle Cabrales and Camín de la Fontica (full text on asturias.es).
  3. Know the 2026 holiday calendar for Gijón
National and regional (BOE of 28 Oct 2025, Resolución de 17 oct 2025): 1 Jan (Thu), 6 Jan (Tue), 2 Apr Holy Thursday (Thu), 3 Apr Good Friday (Fri), 1 May (Fri), 15 Aug (Sat), 8 Sep Día de Asturias (Tue), 12 Oct (Mon), 2 Nov (Mon, day after All Saints), 7 Dec (Mon, after Constitution Day), 8 Dec (Tue), 25 Dec (Fri). Gijón local holidays 2026 (BOPA, Resolución of 3 June 2025): 17 Feb (Tue, Carnaval/Antroxu) and 29 June (Mon, San Pedro).
  4. Plan for 2027
Confirmed so far: Asturias holds 8 September 2027 (Wed, Día de Asturias) in place of the optional national 19 March/25 July holiday (Decreto 7/2026, BOPA 26 Feb 2026). Gijón local holidays 2027: 9 Feb (Tue, Carnaval/Antroxu) and 29 June (Tue, San Pedro) (Resolución of 22 May 2026, BOPA no. 110, 10 June 2026). The full national and regional 2027 list is normally published in the BOE in October; as of 6 Oct 2026 it was not found. By national law the fixed national days (RD 2001/1983 art. 45) fall on: 1 Jan Fri, Good Friday 26 Mar, 1 May Sat, 15 Aug Sun, 12 Oct Tue, 1 Nov Mon, 8 Dec Wed, 25 Dec Sat; whether Asturias keeps Epiphany (6 Jan), Holy Thursday (25 Mar) and substitutes Monday rests for Sunday holidays (15 Aug) must be confirmed in the BOE 2027 resolution.
  5. Use the bus on authorized Sundays
When large stores open on an authorized Sunday/holiday, the city announces service changes: for 16 Aug 2026, Line 6 was rerouted to reach the Alcampo shopping center and pass El Corte Inglés every 30 minutes (gijon.es notice).
