Obtain the TIE residence card
The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the plastic card that proves a non-EU foreigner’s legal residence in Spain; you must apply for it in person at the police documentation unit within one month of arriving on a visa or of being granted a residence authorization.
- Why it matters
- For Americans with a residence visa or authorization (e.g. non-lucrative, work, student), the TIE is the day-to-day proof of status and carries your NIE; the one-month deadline after arrival is easy to miss.
- When
- You have entered Spain on a visa for a stay longer than six months, or a residence authorization has been granted to you in Spain.
- How long it takes
- Apply within one month of entry/authorization (Interior). Card ready roughly 30-60 days after the appointment according to Fulbright Spain (secondary; not an official figure).
