Set up electricity in your name (cambio de titular, tariff, bono social)
To have power at home you need a supply contract in your name (usually by asking an electricity retailer for a free cambio de titular on the existing supply), choosing between the regulated PVPC tariff and a free-market offer; the local network (distributor) depends on your area.
- Why it matters
- The person who actually uses the electricity should hold the contract, so when you move into a flat you normally need to take the supply into your name or arrange a new connection. Understanding the CUPS, tariff types and the bono social avoids overpaying.
- When
- You have a signed rental contract or purchase and keys, and the electricity is still in the previous occupant’s or owner’s name (or there is no active supply).
- How long it takes
- Cambio de titular: between 1 and 20 business days (CNMC presentation). Change of retailer: maximum 10 business days (MITECO).
