Non-lucrative residence visa (living in Spain without working)
The non-lucrative visa and residence authorization is the route the Spanish authorities describe for non-EU nationals who want to live in Spain without any gainful activity, backed by proof of sufficient financial means and full health insurance; it does not allow work of any kind, including remote work.
- Why it matters
- It is the visa most often researched by Americans planning a retirement or sabbatical. Because it forbids all work (even for a US employer), it is easy to pick the wrong pathway; GLIFE-0101 covers the remote-work alternative.
- When
- You plan to live in Spain for more than 90 days and do not intend to work in Spain or remotely.
- How long it takes
- Legal decision period 3 months from the consular procedure (extendable); visa valid 1 year; request TIE within 1 month of entry; initial TIE valid 1 year.
