Keep up US obligations while living abroad (taxes, FBAR, voting, benefits)
US citizens must generally keep filing US tax returns and report foreign accounts from abroad, can vote absentee through FVAP, and can usually keep receiving US Social Security payments overseas.
- Why it matters
- Moving to Spain does not end US filing duties; missing FBAR or Form 8938 reporting can be costly, so plan these early. This is information, not tax advice.
- When
- You are a US citizen (or green-card holder) living in Spain.
- How long it takes
- US return due 15 April with automatic abroad extension to 15 June (IRS); FBAR 15 April, auto-extended to 15 October.
