Obtain the Asturias public health card (tarjeta sanitaria)
The Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual is the card that identifies you in the Asturian public health service (SESPA); you request it at the primary-care health center that corresponds to your address once you are recognized as insured or a beneficiary of the Spanish public system.
- Why it matters
- It is the key that lets you register with a GP, book appointments and use SESPA services, but it depends on having recognized entitlement (for example through Social Security) rather than simply living in Asturias.
- When
- You become recognized as insured or a beneficiary of the Spanish public health system (for example through employment or self-employment affiliation) and live in Asturias.
- How long it takes
- Card delivered by ordinary mail; no delivery time found in the sources. For the universal-access route (foreigners without legal residence) the maximum resolution time is 3 months, with a provisional document issued at filing and silence meaning approval (Real Decreto 180/2026, art. 3).
