Renew temporary residence and move to long-term residence (5 years)
Temporary residence authorizations are renewed in Spain during a window around expiry, and after five years of continuous legal residence a foreigner may apply for national long-term residence or EU long-term residence, which renew far less often.
- Why it matters
- The first TIE is usually valid for one year, so renewal is the first big task after arrival; planning absences and income evidence from year one protects the later long-term application.
- When
- Your TIE is within two months of expiry, or you are approaching five years of legal residence.
- How long it takes
- Renewal: file within 2 months before expiry or up to 3 months after; resolution 3 months. Long-term: 3 months; card within 1 month of approval.
