UK nationals: residence under the Withdrawal Agreement
UK nationals who lived in Spain before 1 January 2021 are covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. The UK government says the TIE is the only valid residency document listed in the Agreement and recommends exchanging the old green certificate for a TIE, marked 'Articulo 50 TUE'. UK nationals moving to Spain since 2021 follow the same visa and residence routes as other non-EU nationals.
- Why it matters
- A TIE spares you the EU Entry/Exit System registration at Schengen borders; the green certificate does not (UK government).
- When
- You are a UK national living in Spain.
